Whitney Moore Young, Jr.
National Urban League Director and Civil Rights Leader
1921 - 1971
- Born on July 31, 1921 in Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky. Both parents were teachers. & As a young student, Whitney received an A in almost every subject.
- In 1941, he earned a bachelor's degree from Kentucky State University.
- Whitney Young served in the US Army during World War II and open mediated disputes and issues between Black soldiers and the White officers.
- He married Margaret Buckner in 1944 and they had two daughters.
- Whitney received a Master's Degree in Social Work in 1947.
- He was named Dean of the College of Social Work at Atlanta University and became Vice-President of the Georgia NAACP.
- In 1961, Whitney Young was named Director of the National Urban League.
- In 1962, Whitney Young started the National Skills Bank which trained workers and developed their skills for jobs in industry.
- Whitney Young was one of the planners of the 1963 March on Washington where he spoke out for civil rights in the work force and all areas society.
- During his ten year tenure as Director of the National Urban League, Whitney Young increased the budget from $300,000 to $35,000,000.
- Whitney Moore Young, Jr. drowned on March 11, 1971 while swimming in Lagos, Nigeria.
